TO the sound of traditional Tongan hymns, five members of a family devastated by one of Queensland’s worst house fires were laid to rest in Carindale today.

Thousands of mourners gathered at the Citipointe Church from 8.30am for the arrival of three hearses bearing the bodies of grandfather Fusi Taufa, his daughter Anamalia, 23, and granddaughters La’Haina, 6, Kahlanie, 4, and Ardelle, 15.

A fourth hearse carried flowers dedicated to the five.

After family members clad in traditional woven mats carried their loved ones inside, ministers speaking in Tongan, Samoan and English told the congregation not to be conquered by their grief.

Many mourners wore T-shirts dedicated to the “11 Angels” killed in the blaze.

Others wore shirts carrying the words “Our girls – always was, always will be, today, tomorrow, now and forever”.
