THE man at the centre of the Peter Slipper sexual harassment scandal seemed to be “delusional” and “unhinged” when he was convicted of making a series of threatening phone calls to a former radio rival.

James Ashby has accused the federal Speaker, who has stepped aside, of making “unwelcome sexual advances” and “unwelcome sexual comments” to him while working as a political adviser.

But radio DJ Paul Fidler said Mr Ashby was no stranger to harassment himself.

He said the political staffer had targeted him with a series of abusive phone calls when they worked at rival Newcastle radio stations in 2002.

Fidler, who was working at NEWFM under the moniker Jim Morrison at the time, said he was afraid to leave the house after Mr Ashby, then at NXFM, began to phone him with threats.

“Delusional – that’s a word I’d bring up [to describe him],” Fidler told The Sunday Telegraph. “What he did wasn’t real flash. I was fearful of leaving the house as I didn’t know what was going on or who it was.”

In one call he physically threatened Fidler, stating: “Next time I see you riding on your f … ing bike I’ll hit you, you idiot, all over the sloppy road you dumb prick.”

In another call recorded by Fidler and used as evidence in court, Mr Ashby said: “F. .k it, if I was your mother I would have drowned you at birth.”

Mr Ashby resigned from NXFM in October 2002 after pleading guilty to using a carriage service in an offensive manner. Fidler said he was so shaken by the abuse he quit his job soon after the court case and moved to rural Victoria.

A former radio colleague of Mr Ashby – who worked with him at Newcastle at the time – said they had no idea he was making the abusive calls until he was charged by police.

“He was a very interesting character,” the former colleague told The Sunday Telegraph. “He was actually quite a good radio talent but, unfortunately, I suspect had mental health issues. I thought at the time that it was just a very odd way to behave.

“I’ve worked with some guys whose judgment can be very poor, but James’ judgment was worse than poor. He was not stupid, but he was unhinged.” Mr Ashby apologised to Fidler for the phone calls, his spokesman said.

“This incident occurred about 10 years ago when Mr Ashby was an on-air radio presenter in Newcastle. He was about 23 years old,” he told The Sunday Telegraph.

“It was a common practice of rival radio presenters at the time to make prank phone calls to each other, as a joke. “Mr Ashby did apologise to Paul at the time, and is happy to repeat that apology.”

Labor has accused Mr Ashby of colluding with Coalition figures to derail Mr Slipper, who denies the allegations, as retribution for his defection.
