Social Media is now Censoring even more after Biden’s speech

Following President Joe Biden’s speech in which he depicted white supremacy as being pervasive in the US, YouTube, Twitch, Microsoft, as well as Facebook and Instagram’s parent company Meta, made an announcement on Thursday stating that they would monitor and remove allegedly hateful and extremist content.

YouTube will reportedly increase the removal of material that “glorifies violent acts” and introduce a campaign to educate young users about the “manipulation strategies used to propagate disinformation,” according to the White House website. Users will find it simpler to report “hate and harassment” on Twitch. Microsoft will employ AI to “detect credible threats of violence” made by users of its products, and Meta will collaborate with the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies to “analyze trends in violent extremism and… help communities combat it.”

These companies already have detailed restrictions on what they consider to be offensive content, but liberals contend that it still exists, while conservatives contend that these policies are used to discriminate against them for political purposes.

The newest censoring initiative was revealed as Biden hosted the ‘United We Stand’ event at the White House. Biden used the occasion to advocate for stronger social media regulation, gun control, and a wide crackdown on the “poison and brutality” of “white supremacists,” in addition to comments from activists, law enforcement, and corporate executives.

The president cited a number of high-profile incidents to support his claim, including the vehicle attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017 and the racially motivated shootings by white gunmen in Texas in 2019 and New York this year, the latter of which was livestreamed by the killer on Twitch. Biden has long maintained that such extremists are “the most lethal terrorist threat in the homeland.”

White Americans are the demographic group least likely to kill someone of a different race, according to FBI crime statistics, but they do not commit hate crimes at a higher rate than people of other races. Given that whites make up 58% of the US population, Hispanics make up 18%, African-Americans make up 12.5%, and other races make up 11.5%, the discrepancy in crime rates between whites and other races is even more pronounced when looking at the raw totals of the aforementioned data.
