The whistleblower who brought the world the Panama Papers has broken his or her silence , but their identity still remains secret.

This person told the press that they “do not work for any government or intelligence agency, directly or as a contractor.”

The source of the leak said that they just wanted to encourage of “global debate” about how “shell companies are often associated with the crime of tax evasion”; but more than that, “they are used to carry out a wide array of serious crimes.”

They also said that they decided to release the papers after seeing the “scale of the injustices” committed by these offshore companies.

In accord, Wally Adeyemo, deputy security adviser for international economics said : “Our financial system should not provide the rich, the powerful and the corrupt with the opportunity to shield their assets and avoid paying their fair share or with the opportunity to hide any illicit activity. Nobody should be able to play by a different set of rules.”

But the road to leaking the Panama Papers proved to be difficult because when offered the documents, “several major media outlets… chose not to cover” this whistleblowing – including WikiLeaks.

The source said that “the media has failed” because even “WikiLeaks didn’t answer its tip line… repeatedly.”

Because of the leak, Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela said his country “is not a tax haven” and has begun a world-wide tour of “diplomatic offensive” to prove it.

Varela has traveled from Tokyo or Washington, DC in the hopes of convincing people that Panama is a great place. His efforts include:

• Hiring Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel-laureate economist to evaluate the nation’s financial system
• Refusing to share bank account data with tax authorities in other countries

Varela told John Kerry, secretary of State, that “Panama’s success does not depend on irregular flows of money into our financial system” nor does the country have “the staff to implement multilateral automatic exchange of information” so he is “focusing on bilateral agreements”.
