Spain’s Basque separatist organization ETA has declared the dismantling of its logistical and operational structures as a further step toward full disarmament.
The announcement was made by the Basque newspaper Gara on Saturday, citing a declaration sent to it by the separatist group.
The newspaper added that the ETA group is also preparing to seal up its last weapon depots, saying the move is aimed at bringing about “a transition from armed confrontation to a democratic” one.
According to the paper, the separatist group seeks to strengthen its political structures and dialogue “to move the peace process forward.”
The Spanish government led by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has not yet formally responded to the move.
The ETA’s decision to dismantle its logistical and operational structures follows another move taken in February, when international monitors released video footage showing weapons which ETA was putting out of use.
The ETA, Europe’s last major violent separatist movement, declared in October 2011 a “definitive end” to its armed activities. The separatist group has been weakened in recent years as many of its senior leaders and hundreds of its active members have been arrested.
This is while other Basque nationalist parties have gained strength in the region in the past years, raising the prospect of political progress on the independence issue.
The ETA said the Basque nationalist parties must now “take the leadership of the liberation process.”
Listed as a terrorist organization by Spain, the United States, and the European Union, the ETA is held accountable for the deaths of over 800 people in bombings and shootings since the late 1960s.
The group is seeking the creation of a Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwest France.
