A Church that first opened its gates in 1827 will be closed for the first time on Easter Sunday following a series thefts.

Parishioners at St Mary’s The Mount Church, in Walsall have taken the unprecedented measures after thieves stole a war memorial plaque for the Church’s gardens.

That robbery was proceeded by another break-in six weeks earlier, when a man smashed his way through the metal shutters of the church’s piety store and stole rosaries.

Reverend Canon Peter Taylor condemned
the theft, adding: ‘We just feel it’s stooping as low as you can get.
Metal plaques won’t be going up there again.

‘We will replace them with some other
material, but not something that will catch the eye of someone who will
make money out of it.

‘I have had the church open every day
for 42 years, but I have to close it now unless there is a service
because of people lurking around who come in and pinch things.’

Parishioner Jack Kelly, 28, said it was sickening to think the church would not be open for Easter for the first time in its history

He said: ‘To think the doors will be closed to worship at a time like Easter because of these thefts is incredible.

‘It’s not even that the plaques are worth anything, it’s more about that these people are stealing from a church and dishonouring the memory of our war dead.

‘I think it’s very sad a Christian church will not be able to open its doors to celebrate Easter.’

Canon Taylor revealed that he was inside the church when it was first targeted. He said: ‘The amount of damage he did was about £1,000 worth. I was in another room of the church at the time and I thought the church was caving in it was a terrific bang.’

And he admitted to having serious concerns over the safety of his parish, adding: ‘The amount of people taking drugs that carry on around here and in the cemetery is huge.

‘The police come around now and again, but they can’t be here all the time.’

Six months previously, a small bell which was rung during church services also went missing.

Churches desecrated and old age pensioners attacked in their own homes. 40 something years of “progressive” liberal meddling has left this country far away from civilisation.

Perhaps if I was from Iraq with my 10 kids and had my shoe stolen the Police would of taken more interest.

Modern Britain, what the hell has gone wrong with OUR Country ….sigh……

The era of heathen trash.

How sad – churches are now unsafe. How continue to call ourselves “civilised”?

Makes you weep but there are good people out there.

Dear Dave Clark. Please learn to spell. Also, it would be nice to show some Christian spirit during Holy Week, rather than Xenophobia.
Very sad the church will be closing.

This is such a sad story. Cameron bleats on about the big society, which is a fine idea, but far too little and too late to halt the moral decline which engulfs us. What we need is the big stick and the long arm of the law to be properly deployed. These crimes affect all of us as things which we took for granted, such as the church door being open in a moment of need, are now denied to us. These incidents chip away at our society making people fearful, unavailable for others, wary of strangers etc. etc. Lawyers now seem more interested in ambulance chasing rather than upholding high moral and ethical standards. With such an example what hope of justice do we have. We really need a social revolution to set things back on the right track.

I guess the thieves aren’t Christians !

Unfortunately, The Police are not really interested in turning out for thefts from churches. I called and reported two lads on the roof of a village church at 02:00 in the morning. No one came out and the lead was stolen from the roof. The way things are going I’m starting to think people who care will need to start organising and guarding churches themselves. Remote rural churches are being completely trashed and there is no inclination to develop a stratagy to stop it.
