Stem cell therapy repairs heart damage

Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore treated 17 heart attack patients with cells grown from their own heart tissue.

The new proceeding not only proved that the procedure was safe, but also showed that the therapy can significantly heal scarring and even help new heart muscles grow, researchers wrote in the journal The Lancet.

On average, stem cell infusions reduced the size of heart muscle scars in the studied patients from 24 percent to 12 percent, said senior researcher Dr. Eduardo Marban, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute.

The follow up study showed that 12 months after receiving stem cell injections, only one patient appeared to have a serious side effect.

Scientists don’t yet know exactly how the stem cells reduce the size of the dead zone of scar tissue but Dr. Marban believes the cells repaired the damaged heart muscle “indirectly, by stimulating the heart’s endogenous capacity to regrow [which normally lies dormant].”

For the next step, the research team is planning to test the novel treatment on a larger group of people including 120 heart attack patients.
