Stewart, Colbert become infomercial for war

Commentary by Dr. Patrick Slattery – Both of Comedy Central’s news satire hosts went to the mat on behalf of different aspects of the Ziowars last week. First on Jan 23 Jon Stewart hosted an “expert” on drone warfare without asking a single question about civilian casualties, let alone why we are trying to kill people on the other side of the world the whose only “crime” is resisting Israeli or ZioAmerican domination of their counties. Then the next day Stephen Colbert devoted much of his program to praising France for sending its military to Mali and “kicking some butt.” He invited the Jewish NYU history professor and Emma Lazarus enthusiast Edward Berenson on the show to gush about how wonderful it was of France to send troops with U.S. support.

Stewart and Colbert’s shows, both of which are produced by Stewart, have a young hipster following that in general opposes the war. Both shows have been over all critical of the Iraq War and some aspects of the “War on Terror,” which makes it all the more damaging when they promote drone strikes and invasions of selected countries as they have built up credibility with this segment of the erstwhile antiwar community. Last night, Jon Stewart hosted Mary “Missy” Cummings, a MIT associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics, on The Daily Show. Cummings was on because she was recently a spokesperson in a PBS documentary called Rise of the Drones, which FireDogLake powerfully argued today is an “infomercial for the military defense industry.”

Throughout the interview, Stewart entertained Cummings’s accounts on why drone technology is important, its commercial uses and its precision. They laughed about drones seeming dystopian and concluded that this was merely a perception. Stewart’s big concern seemed to be how many people will acquire drones now that they’re easy and cheap to make. No mention of innocent casualties. (Read the rest here.)
