Researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHSM) have published a shocking study showing the deadly effects of “medical errors” committed by hospitals and other healthcare facilities that kill more than 251,000 people every year.

According to the study, “people [are] dying from the care that they receive rather than the disease for which they are seeking care.”

On death certificates, the coding system used does not account for causes of death such as diagnostic errors, and poor judgment on the part of the doctor that leads to patient’s losing their lives.

Bob Anderson, chief mortality statistics operator for the CDC argued that the agency’s coding is not the problem.

Anderson said: “Complications from medical care are listed on death certificates, and that codes do capture them; however mortality statistics count only the ‘underlying cause of death,’ defined as the condition that led a person to seek treatment.”

In defense of the coding system, Anderson said the CDC is in compliance with “international guidelines” and to change them now would be difficult because they have “no compelling reason to do so”.

In addition, Anderson cited the “uncomfortable situation” doctor’s find themselves when reporting that a patient died from “a medical error”, and suggested that it would be better “to educate doctors about the importance of reporting errors.”

For insurance and lawsuit purposes, doctors and hospitals do not report these types of deaths. For the sake of remaining employed and in business,

In 1999, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) published a report showing that medical errors are responsible for 98,000 deaths annually; however this new study shows that nearly 700 patients die every day because of failures in the for-profit healthcare system.

That number equates to 9.5% of all deaths in the US; and the worst part is these are preventable, but because hospitals “avoid talking about” this problem, they seem to get away with it.

The authors of this study have written an open letter to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requesting that they add medical errors to their list of top causes of death in this country.

Beyond this deadly epidemic happening in hospitals, it seems that doctors and surgeons have lost their ability to display empathy toward their patients.

In 2015, editors for the Annals of Internal Medicine journal exposed 2 accounts of inappropriate behavior of doctors against patients while under anesthesia.

This “exposure of the dark underbelly” of medicine was meant to prod more healthcare professionals to speak out when they witness such behavior.

The report stated: “By shining a light on this dark side of the profession, we emphasize to physicians young and old that this behavior is unacceptable — we should not only refrain from personally acting in such a manner but also call out our colleagues who do.”

Although the report was anonymously written, the author describes an instance when teaching medical humanities at a university when the question was posed: “Do any of you have someone to forgive from your clinical experiences? Did anything ever happen that you need to forgive or perhaps still can’t forgive?”
