Sudan lifts ban on entry of Danish goods and citizens

Sudan has lifted a ban on the entry of Danish goods and citizens, it announced yesterday.

The Central Bank of Sudan said on its website that it had issued orders to Sudanese banks to lift the ban which was imposed in 2008 after the publication of offensive cartoons against Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him). It is not clear why Sudan decided to lift the ban.

In spite of the ban, Danish goods were able to find their way to Sudan through other countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

In 2006, a Danish newspaper published offensive cartoons of Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) angering Muslims and provoking riots across the world resulted in the killing of more than 200 people and, in 2008, Danish newspapers reprinted the offensive cartoons in solidarity with the original newspaper.
