‘Suits’ ‘War’ review: Will Harvey Specter survive the season finale?

Suits” has never been a predictable show, and “War” — the season finale that aired on Feb. 21 — was no exception. From the start, it seemed like the final moments could have one of two results: either Harvey (Gabriel Macht) wins the case against Edward (Conleth Hill) and the merger doesn’t happen, or Harvey loses and he’s stuck at Pearson due to a non-compete — and he won’t get his name on the coveted door.

While the latter happened on the USA Network dramedy, it wasn’t that cut and dry. Battle lines were drawn, but they were messy. For the first time ever it seemed that yes, Jessica (Gina Torres) doesn’t trust Harvey. But why would she when Harvey has suddenly decided to do whatever it takes — even illegal things — to win?

If “Suits” “War” proved anything, it’s that Harvey has become a broken man. He’s losing his swagger. He may have fended off numerous attacks over season two, namely those instigated by Hardman, but he’s been pushed to his breaking point. Or, as he likes to say, he’s been pushed against a wall — and still, he goes down swinging.

Harvey’s demise seems to be highlighted even more so by his ever so proper adversary Edward, who Mike (Patrick J. Adams) compares to the characters of “Downton Abbey.” When Edward warns Harvey that he’ll be freezing Harvey’s client’s assets, he’s giving away his game plan, kind of. “It wouldn’t be sporting otherwise,” Edward says. “One doesn’t hunt a fox while he’s still in his den.”

But Harvey’s downfall is all the more poignant for how it ends. Dana Scott (Abigail Spencer) has done everything she has — even the merger — in an attempt to get closer to Harvey, because she loves him. But Harvey never saw that, and that’s why he fought tooth and nail to stop her from getting her name on the same door as him. In the end, he lost it all. Or did he?

When Dana’s fired, Harvey asks Edward to hire her back, and Edward gives Harvey the choice: should Dana return to London, or stay in New York? That answer will have to wait until “Suits” season three, but here’s hoping Harvey finally grows a pair and gives love a chance. “You fight for hell for everything that happens here [at Pearson], but nothing that happens in here,” Donna (Sarah Rafferty) says, pointing to her heart.

While Harvey is flailing, others are making some admissions of their own. Louis (Rick Hoffman) initially struggles with his British counterpart Nigel, both fearing for their jobs, and they sling “mud” at each other. But then they realize they have even more in common: they’re not good at making — and keeping — friends. Alas, in the end, Louis ends up not trusting Nigel enough, and puts him on his efficiency list, but Louis will make something right for another friend: Rachel (Meghan Markle).

Throughout “Suits” “War,” Rachel, understandably so, has decided to go above Sheila’s head so she can gain admission to Harvard. She needs Mike’s signature as witness, but he’s not a real alumni, so he can’t. But he can’t tell her that — and so he goes to Louis. Louis won’t sign the letter either, and finally he tells Rachel the truth: she was good, just not good enough.

Rachel lashes out at Mike, criticizing him for all his lies. But Mike has been protecting her from the truth all along. “You don’t understand everything I’ve been through, everything I’ve lost… I’m not ready to lose you. Not today,” he says. And then he tells her his deepest darkest secret, “I never went to Harvard. I’m a fraud.”

She may be completely upset by the truth, but she now sees Mike for who he really is — and they not only kiss, but have sex right there in the filing room.

And so ends “Suits” season two. What’s next for Pearson Darby, and Harvey’s low-standing on the totem pole? Plenty more drama, to be sure, this summer.
