‘Survivor: Caramoan’, Episode 2 preview: ‘Honey Badger’

Despite being off to the lowest ratings in Survivor history, Survivor: Caramoan – Fans vs. Favorites, seemed to be off to a pretty promising start.

Yes, we got mostly what we would have expected from the returning so-called “favorites,” with Phillip being Phillip and Cochran being Cochran. It seems that with Episode 2, we will finally get Brandon being Brandon.

All hell looks to be breaking loose once the returning players arrive back at camp following the season’s first Tribal Council, which sadly saw Francesca get voted out first for the second time in her two seasons. Ouch! The preview video shows Brandon wanting to exact revenge on his tribe after he finds himself in the minority alliance after only three days in the game.

It’s not like his reputation in the game had done him any favors. Yes he was loyal to an almost annoying fault during his first season (South Pacific), but he also revealed himself to be quite unpredictable. Being a Hantz, there is an uneasiness built in to how he is perceived in the game. He, like many others, faced an uphill battle when it came to rising above these preconceived notions.

But then again, you are what you are. Take it from Fran. On one hand it’s hard not to have sympathy for someone booted from the game first, on two different occasions. But then again, perhaps there is a reason that a person is voted out first! Point being, maybe Brandon, Phillip, Corinne and others deserve the stigma that they bring into the game (unpredictable, bat-crap crazy and bitchy, respectively). Of the three, only Corinne seems to have a possibility of creating her image anew.

Here is the episode synopsis as presented for Episode 2, from CBS:

Episode 2, “Honey Badger” – REELING FROM A MERCILESS ELIMINATION AT TRIBAL COUNCIL, BRANDON TARGETS DAWN AS THE LEADER OF THE VOTE AND PHILLIP ASSIGNS UNDERCOVER IDENTITIES TO HIS ALLIANCE, on “SURVIVOR: CARAMOAN – FANS VS. FAVORITES,” WEDNESDAY, FEB. 20. Following the first elimination of the season, Brandon targets Dawn as the leader of what he sees as an unsuitable vote and matchless teamwork and disorganization from one tribe leaves little room for competition during a tiered Immunity Challenge, on SURVIVOR: CARAMOAN – FANS vs. FAVORITES, Wednesday, Feb. 20 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Analysis. So we haven’t even mentioned the new kids! It looks like CBS is hyping Brandon’s wild, explosive streak, to the point that it may be too obvious that Brandon could be the one voted out this week. It is also a question to see how long the Favorites tribe will be able to stomach Phillip.

This only bodes well for those that came out on top last week, such as Cochran, Dawn, Corinne and Malcolm. Look for Phillip to stay safe, since he is at least in with the majority alliance. That means that Brenda and Erik could be goners soon…but they won’t get the boot quicker than Brandon, if indeed he continues his Hantz shenanigans (“Hantz-nanigans?”) for much longer.

Of the newbies, it will prove interesting to see how the tribe dynamics continue to take shape. Will the “cool kids” alliance of Reynold, Allie, Eddie and Hope prevail if they do find themselves at Tribal Council? Those poor popular kids never were too good at math. Four just isn’t going to cut it, so much of their hope rides on what Michael decides to do. If Michael does get bullied by the cool kids, he is likely to take Matt (“The Beard”) with him since the two bonded, so that could leave Shamar, Laura, Sherri and Julia on the outs. If Michael and Matt decide to go with the “uncool” alliance, one of the cool kids may find themselves dropping out of the game.

If you look at it though, the only player in no particular alliance is Shamar. Could he be the first Fan to go? In the good old days of Survivor, the strong were kept around to provide for the others and to dominate challenges. But these days, muscles and physicality are usually not enough to be allowed to stay in the game.

So if I had to guess, I’d say either Shamar or Brandon will be sent packing tonight. There is also the business of hidden Immunity Idols coming into play, so don’t count either of them out. If Brandon truly has Hantz blood flowing through his veins, then he is not going to leave the game without a fight, or without pulling an Idol out of his pants.
