The suspect involved in the death of Greek-American New York Police Department (NYPD) officer Anastasios Tsakos appeared in court on Tuesday, facing multiple charges. Jessica Beauvais has been charged with the accidental killing of Tsakos in a drunken driving car accident.

Beauvais faces 13-count indictment

Beauvais faces a long list of charges in relation to the death of Greek-American NYPD officer Tsakos.

When the court met on Tuesday, it charged Beauvais with the following crimes: aggravated manslaughter in the second degree, manslaughter in the second degree, aggravated criminally negligent homicide, vehicular manslaughter in the second degree, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle in the second and third degree, two counts of operating a motor vehicle while under influence of alcohol, operating a motor vehicle while impaired by combined use of drugs or of alcohol and drugs, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree and failure to exercise due care when operating a motor vehicle when approaching an authorized emergency vehicle.

She faces 15 years in prison if convicted of all the charges brought against her. According to WABC-7, “police say Beauvais told investigators she had been drinking before she got behind the wheel of her car last month.”

Beauvais is currently being held without bail and her family — including her parents, siblings, and thirteen year old child — were present in court when she and her defense entered a plea of not guilty.

Her next court date is in late July; there have been no public statements made by her or her family on the matter.

In court, Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch spoke with emotion about Tsakos’ death.

“Imagine going to work one day and never coming home. Imagine the plans you had for your children later on that day and you never come back to do it. Well, that’s how they feel, but what scares them most is that they know it will never end, sir, they know the pain will never go away regardless of what happens in this courtroom,” WABC reported Lynch as saying in front of the judge and onlookers in the New York courtroom.

Tragic death of Greek-American NYPD officer

Greek-American NYPD officer Tsakos, 43, was on the Long Island Expressway in Queens directing traffic away from a previous accident before 2 AM on April 27. NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said that the motorist who struck Tsakos, allegedly Beauvais, was driving while intoxicated on a suspended driver’s license.

Shea explained that Tsakos was responding with his fellow officer to the scene of a car crash that had killed one motorist and the vehicle burst into flames. Tsakos was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital in Queens, where doctors were unable to save his life.

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of a valued member of @NYPDHighway Unit #3, Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos, whom was killed in the line of duty this morning on the Long Island Expressway,” Inspector Nicole Papamichael, commander of Tsakos’ unit, tweeted after his death.
