The identity of the foreign man who last weekend murdered a mother in her 50s and an 18-year-old woman in an arson attack in a Stockholm suburb is being classified as secret. The Södertörn district court has decided that.

Yesterday, a man was arrested on probable cause on suspicion of aggravated arson, murder and attempted murder on the night of March 4. The man poured flammable liquid through the letterbox onto a door to an apartment on Alhagsvägen in the Stockholm suburb of Alby and lit it.

Two women, one in their 50s and an 18-year-old who was visiting her boyfriend, died in the fire. Three more people, two men and a boy, survived.

Secret perpetrator

The court has chosen to keep the identity of the man in custody for the double murder a secret. In normal cases, the identity is made public in connection with detention.

– I have requested that the suspect’s name and other information be covered by confidentiality also during the detention hearing and in the event of a detention decision. The reason is that there is a danger that the suspect or someone close to him will be subjected to violence or suffer other serious harm if the information is revealed. In the end, it is the district court that decides whether the secrecy shall apply or not, said chamber prosecutor Kajsa Lindberg before the remand hearing.

So the Södertörn district court shares an opinion, as it considers that it is a “special exceptional case”. However, it appears from the detention petition that the detainee is a foreign citizen of an unknown country.

Gang conflict

The brutal double murder in Alby is seen as part of an escalated gang conflict, where the gangs have begun to map out and attack their enemies’ families and other relatives. Now it is considered that there is a risk that the arsonist’s family will also be affected.

“The danger that has emerged may, at this early stage of the investigation, be considered to have a sufficient degree of concreteness and also appears to be tangible”, writes the district court in its arrest decision and believes that the public needs to know who he is.

“It is difficult to see that the interest of the public in knowing who is the suspect in a case like this can be particularly strong,” it says.
