Sylvia Earle Launches Mission Blue to Spread the Word of Ocean Conservation

In 2009, Sylvia Earle made a wish: To ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas, “hope spots” large enough to save and restore the ocean, the blue heart of the planet. A year later, this dream was honored by the TED Prize.

Of course, Earle has been working to better understand and protect the world’s oceans her entire career—which is one of the reasons TreeHugger honored her as Person of the Year in 2010—but the recognition of the TED Prize has allowed her to reach out to some partners in the media to spread the message of conservation even further.

Mission Blue is the latest project from the Sylvia Earle Alliance. The website pulls in news, research, and opportunities for action from across the web and around the world— consolidating it in one place. The goal is to “elevate public awareness about critical ocean issues and to inspire support for organizations, projects and initiatives that are making a positive difference for the ocean.”
