Syria now a "matter of homeland security" for US and EU

The interior ministers of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States met in Krakow on 6 February 2014.

The main topic on the agenda was how to deal with jihadists returning home from Syria.

While the governments of these six countries had facilitated, in 2011, the departure of their own nationals to Syria in anticipation of a “liberation” by NATO, they are now jittery about seeing these fighters come back.

The ministers decided to treat this as a matter of “homeland security”, said Jeh Johnson, US Secretary of Homeland Security, in his first speech since being sworn into office.

It should be noted that Russia made Syria a matter of “homeland security” at the beginning of 2012, considering that if Syria were to fall NATO would attack the Russian Caucuses.
