Syrian Arab Army declares Deir Ez Zor city fully liberated from Islamic State

nsnbc : The Syrian Arab Army, on Friday, announced that the city of Deir Ez Zor has been fully liberated from the Islamic State after their last positions fell in during battles in the al-Jbiliah and al-Abed, al-Jamaiat neighborhoods on Thursday. The city had, for a long time after 2013, served as the Islamic State’s main hub for the export of Syrian oil via Iraq and Turkey while the EU lifted its ban on the import of Syrian oil from rebel-held territories.

MUd_Oil_Water_SP_OCAn official Syrian Arab Army (SAA) source reported on Friday, November 3, 2017, that “Units of the Syrian Arab Army, in cooperation with the allied and supporting forces, have accomplished the mission of fully liberating Deir Ez Zor city from ISIS terrorist organization.”

The SAA reports that “large numbers of ISIS terrorists including leaders were killed and their weapons and equipment destroyed”. The army also reports that it seized ISIS’ munitions depots in the city.

The SAA did not report on the number casualties among ISIS fighters or the number of eventual captives. The SAA did not release information about casualties among SAA and allied troops either. This fact is consistent with a disturbing, global trend not to report on or not to take captives.

After assuming full control of the city, the army’s engineering units embarked on sweeping the streets, roads, squares and buildings in the newly-liberated neighborhoods to remove unexploded ordnance including bombs, mines and improvised explosive devices left behind by ISIS terrorists in the area.

The full liberation of the city on Friday came after the SAA, on Thursday, managed to restore full control over the al-Jbiliah, al-Abed and al-Jamaiat neighborhoods in the city after eliminating the last gatherings of ISIS there. SAA and allied units also regained control over al-Hamidyah neighborhood thus laying the foundation for declaring the city fully liberated on Friday.

Much of Syria’s hydrocarbon-rich Deir Ez Zor province and the city of Deir Ez Zor were captured by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (a.k.a. ISIS, ISIL, Daesh, IS, etc.) in 2013. The Islamic State subsequently exported large quantities of stolen / captured Syrian oil through northern Iraq and Turkey from where the “laundered” Syrian oil reached the international markets.

nsnbc international would, among others, stress that European Union policy may have contributed to this export that helped fund the Islamic State when the EU, in April 2013, lifted sanctions against the import of Syrian oil provided the oil came from “rebel-held territories”.
