Syrian regime escalates attacks against civilians in Homs and Idlib

A destroyed street in AleppoThe Syrian regime has escalated its ground operations and aerial bombardment against various Syrian cities, using chlorine toxic gas near Homs and Idlib, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.

Media activist, Abdul Quntar told the news site: “The Syrian helicopters threw two explosive barrels containing chlorine toxic gas on Kafroumah town in the areas surrounding Idlib, causing 10 civilians to suffocate.”

Quntar pointed out that “the suffocation cases did not extend to fainting and therefore the field hospital discharged them.”

Syrian forces have increased the use of chlorine toxic gas during the past period where in 2014 several cases of suffocation were identified in the towns of Kufersita, Altamanaah, Telmans, Seracab, and Atshan.

The organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) announced last week that “Syria has handed over the remainder of its chemical weapons which weighed a hundred tonnes of toxic substances, although investigating the use of chlorine gas was not part of the mission’s mandate.”

The regime forces are reported to have stepped up their operations against civilians in the rural areas of Homs, Damascus and Aleppo leaving several people dead and many wounded.

According to a media office in the town of Rastan, “regime forces pounded, with heavy artillery, seven primary schools while children were leaving them, killing five children and injuring several others.”

In Damascus, three civilians, including two children, were killed when regime warplanes bombarded the Kufr Batna town with rockets.

The regime’s air force also launched six raids on the town of Maliha, and other raids on the neighbourhood of Jobar, which led to extensive damage to infrastructure.
