Taiwan anti-govt. protesters hold rallies

Marching through the streets of the capital on Saturday, the protesters expressed concerns over Ma’s policies ahead of the inauguration of his government on Sunday.

Taiwan’s main opposition, the Democratic Progressive Party, estimates that 100,000 would attend the protests.

Ma was re-elected for a second term in January, but his economic policies, in particular his decision to raise the utility prices have raged the voters.

The pro-China president, however, argued that the policies have not been properly explained to the public. “The policies are good,” he said. “It’s just that we didn’t explain them to the public enough.”

Prior to his re-election, Ma said he has planned to invest more on women and youngsters, including offering them housing subsidies, adding that his party’s policy of rapprochement with China has benefited the island’s economy.

China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since the defeated Nationalist forces fled to the island at the end of the civil war with the Communists in 1949.

China claims that Taiwan is a Chinese province, which has no right to seek independence, and it has not ruled out the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.
