Taiwanese youth organization demands timetable for removal of nuclear waste from Orchid Island

nsnbc : The Lanyu Youth Action Alliance, on August 1, demanded that the government of Taiwan provide a timetable for the removal of nuclear waste from Lanyu (Orchid Island) and demanded action instead of lip service to the cause. Nuclear waste has been stored on the island for decades.

Some of the waste will have to be stored safely and isolated from the environment for a period longer than recorded human history. About 100,000 barrels of nuclear waste from the Taiwan’s three operational nuclear power plants have been stored at a nuclear waste storage complex on Orchid Island since 1982.

In the morning of August 1, which was designated as the Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the group went to the nuclear waste storage site on the island to express their protest against the government’s inaction to remove the waste.

Orchid Islands is, even without the nuclear waste, widely known as the garbage dump of the Pacific Ocean currents. Beaches on the restive island that is mainly populated by indigenous people, are swamped by plastic and other garbage that it transported there by ocean currents from Indonesia, the Philippines and other Pacific states. The plastic pollution especially, threatens green sea turtle populations which are laying eggs on the island.
