nsnbc : The office of Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen congratulated South Korean president-elect Moon Jae-in for his victory in the presidential election on Tuesday and noted that Taiwan and South Korea, as democratic countries in the region share the same values in terms of democracy and freedom.
The 64-year-old Moon Jae-in, a former human rights lawyer, served as South Korean opposition leader since 2015. Moon favors a less belligerent approach to intra-Korean relations, intra-Korean talks, a return to the so-called sunshine policy and less dependence on the United States.
Moon won the presidency in a landslide election victory on Tuesday, in elections that came about after the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye in a corruption and nepotism scandal.
Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen extended her congratulations to Moon on Wednesday. Her office released a statement saying:
“President Tsai Ing-wen on behalf of the government of the Republic of China (ROC) and its people, congratulates President-elect Moon Jae-in and the people of South Korea on their successful presidential election.”
In her statement, Tsai also underpinned that Taiwan and South Korea are two democratic nations that share the same values in terms of democracy and freedom.
The two have long enjoyed close economic ties and cultural exchanges, while people-to-people exchanges have seen continuous increase over the years, Tsai said in the statement.
Under the new president’s leadership, Tsai said she expects the two nations to continue strengthening cooperation and work together for the promotion of peace and security in the Asia Pacific region, the statement said.
