A TEENAGE boy – who was not wearing a seatbelt – has died after a car, driven by an unlicensed teenager, hit a tree on an unsealed road near Balaklava.

The youth, 17, from Tarlee, died at the scene. He was a passenger on the side of the car which struck the tree.

The car – which had five teenage occupants in total, four girls and the victim aged 14-17 years – drove on to the wrong side of the road, mounted an embankment and hit the tree.

Police say the female driver, also 17 and from Balaklava, will be charged with several offences, including driving unlicensed.

The crash occurred on Rocks Rd just before midnight. The road led to a popular reserve in the area and police suspect all occupants were friends.

One other passenger sustained a fractured jaw, while injuries to the driver and two other passengers were minor.

All were taken to various hospitals.

It is the third death on the state’s roads this Easter after a double fatal crash at Ki Ki yesterday morning claimed the lives of a man and woman, both 22.

The youth’s death takes the state’s annual road toll to 32, compared to 25 at the same time last year.
