Terror threat for Egypt raised amid fears of attacks on Britons

Last week, al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian-born cleric, called
on jihadists to attack and kidnap Westerners around the world.

In June, Jonathan Evans, the Director General of MI5, warned the Arab Spring
had spawned a new generation of terrorists, especially in Libya and Egypt.

A number of Salafi Islam fundamentalist groups are associated with al-Qaeda in
Egypt, especially in the Sinai region.

This year alone, groups have attacked Israeli interests, gas pipelines,
Egyptian soldiers and churches.

In 2006, two Britons were among 23 people killed in a series of bombings in
the resort town of Dahab.

A year earlier, bomb attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh left 88 people dead and 150
wounded and in 1997, 62 tourists were killed near Luxor by a group posing as
security guards.

The Foreign Office insisted Egypt’s main resorts remain safe but warned
tourists not to stray outside them.

Advice on its website said: “There is a high threat from terrorism throughout
Egypt, including in Sinai.

“Although security is tight throughout the country, especially in resort
areas, there remains a high risk of attacks, which could be indiscriminate,
including in public places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers
such as hotels and restaurants.”

It warns people not to travel to north Sinai at all and recommends only
essential travel in south Sinai.
