Texas Police Officer Stabs Wife In Stomach During Date Night

A McKinney police officer has been arrested after police say he stabbed his wife in the stomach early Thursday.

Police were called shortly after midnight to a home in the 7900 block of Texian Trail, near Stacy and Alma roads, at the request of the McKinney Fire Department.

A woman who answered the door appeared to be in pain, had blood on her shirt and was walking “in a hunched over manner,” police said. She told a responding officer that her 4-year-old child was still in the home.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the woman said she and her husband — 43-year-old Audrey Lee Palmer — had a date night.

At one point in the evening, he received a text message from an unfamiliar number, and she called the number. A woman answered “Hey, babe” and then hung up when confronted about it.

The woman and Palmer then got into an argument, and she picked up a steak knife in the kitchen “out of anger,” the affidavit says. The two then started to fight over the knife, and Palmer was attempting to pin her down, police say.

“The next thing she knew she had been stabbed with the knife,” the affidavit says.

Palmer then left the room and his wife tried to call for help. Her phone was broken, so she used a computer to ask a relative to call authorities for her.

Palmer came back and started to clean up the blood, but drove off with the knife when he saw his wife trying to call for help.

The woman was hospitalized with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.

Police arrested Palmer, a 21-year veteran of the department who is a sergeant in the patrol division.

He faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — family violence. He was being released from the Collin County Jail after posting $50,000 bond Thursday.

The department has placed Palmer on administrative leave while criminal and internal investigations are conducted.

“There is still a lengthy investigation ahead to determine detailed circumstances of the incident,” Sgt. Ana Shelley, a police spokeswoman, said in a written statement. “This investigation is ongoing and will be handled thoroughly by our department.”
