Congratulations on surviving children! You did it! Hopefully your kids have moved out and are realizing the effects of persistence and hard work. Once the kiddos say adieu to your abode, the decision now arises what you should do with your home. Do you stay for the memories, or do you pack up for the next chapter in your life?
As you continue to mature in age, you may discover that the size of your home is a bit unnecessary. Do you really need all of those rooms to clean out or stairs to climb up and down each day? Once the children have left, some empty nesters pack up their belongings and move into a smaller home. It makes sense to downsize when it’s yourself and possibly a spouse. But how can you get your home’s belongings into a smaller space?
Glad you asked.
{HOW TO DOWNSIZE YOUR HOME}
- Assess your home goods and personal items in advance (months before you move or even considering moving). This will keep you organized and less stressed.
- Categorize your possessions by importance: what can you live without? What do you have to bring to your new home?
- Itemize your list by importance. Once you have determined items you would like to bring to the new home, rate their importance. You may find what you thought was a must ahve is not a top priority and just might collect dust somewhere. Tip: If you have a life partner, make two separate lists that you will bring together for compromise. Never devalue the significance of their possessions to them, or their opinion.
- Assign rooms for each item in your new home. If it looks like a room may have too much stuff, go back to your list and if needed, remove an item.
- Think about what to do with the discarded. You can donate unneeded goods to charity, sell them for money at a garage sale or pass them along to family and friends.
