The Lions

By J.B.D.

Once upon a time a group of jackals begrudged the lions their rich and beautiful country. In their envy the jackals thought up a scheme and talked a horde of mixed animals into invading the land of the lions.

After a fierce battle the greatly outnumbered lions were defeated, and the jackals suggested to the victorious horde that the conquered lions should be either killed or caged, especially the old ones who showed any spunk; then they could let the young ones go free.

While the other animals moved on, the jackals now took over the government of the land. The young lions were taught that cowardice was courage, ignorance was wisdom… buzzards could became eagles, and sense became nonsense.

Things went on in this good old liberal way until one day the jackals found ‘their’ country threatened by a tribe of menacing bears.

“Let’s appeal to the young lions,” the jackals said to one another, but to their surprise they found that the young lions had become so mixed-up and weak-minded that they had altogether lost their royal qualities. It was obvious that these lions would be no match for the bears.

“Wait!” cried one of the jackals, “let’s release the old lions; they have retained their lion hearts; they will fight, and they will lead the young ones.”

“Right on!” shouted the other jackals, “those damned bears are as good as dead!” The jackals quickly got the old lions out of the cages, and in their insolence expected them to help defeat the bears.

“Go soak your heads!” the lions said, “you took our land; we’ll kill you first, then we’ll fight the bears.”

Moral: Don’t expect any normal lion to love his enemies!
