The EPA has just released official “fuel economy” and range information for the BMW i3 100% electric car. A bit surprisingly, it tops the list of all cars on the US market when it comes to fuel economy. The EPA gave it a rating of 124 MPGe. That’s 74 MPGe above the fuel economy of the Toyota Prius, which is the most efficient car that can’t plug in and charge using electricity.

The 10 most efficient cars in the US are all 100% electric plug-in cars. Well, every plug-in car on the market (100% electrics as well as plug-in hybrids) is more efficient than the Toyota Prius. Here’s the top 10 list, according to the EPA:

1. BMW i3 = 124 MPGe

With official EPA numbers in, deliveries of the BMW i3 can now commence in the US, which is good since there’s a long list of customers who have pre-ordered the car and have been waiting for it for months.

The official range given to the 100% electric BMW i3 is 81 miles. The i3 can go from 0 to 60 MPH in 7.2 seconds, but it has a much different feel than a gas car that can go from 0 to 60 in that time. The i3, like other electric cars, has instant torque, so if you really step on it, it feels like you’re going into warp speed… well, sort of. In my opinion, this actually offers a huge improvement to driving ease, as it makes merging into fast-driving traffic or a roundabout much easier and less stressful.

If you follow all of TreeHugger’s electric car stories, then you’ve seen this before, but if not: the BMW i3 is the best car (of any type) I’ve ever driven. It’s drive quality is well above that of more expensive gasmobiles that I’ve driven. There’s nothing that compares to an electric drive. Of course, I haven’t yet driven the Tesla Model S.

The price of the BMW i3 is $41,350 in the US before any incentives. After the federal tax credit, that comes to $33,850. In the largest car market in the US, California, it comes down further to $31,350 after you count the California EV rebate. Similar rebates exist in several other states as well.

$31,350 is about the same price as the average new car in the US. Yet, with the i3, you’re also saving massive moola thanks to the i3’s tremendous efficiency. Thanks to the i3’s electric motor, carbon fiber body, and innovative design, you can save money while driving a comfortable and spacious luxury vehicle with excellent acceleration. If I were living in the US and in the market for a car, I’m sure this one would be high on my list, if not at the very top.
