Welcome to A Primitive Evolution’s The Prize, a full length album that provides a glimpse into the alternative world of a band native to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, bent on making impactful music. A collection of ten songs, The Prize, is not standard fare alternative, but an onslaught of heavy, layered rock with lyrics that are organic, raw and real. Opening with “Lord of Reason,” vocalist Brett Carruthers is able to establish a powerful pull over the listener with contemplative ruminations.
“I Feel It All,” is perhaps the prize to take away from this collection. A reflective track, the song accomplishes much in the span of almost five minutes with its thought-provoking mission. “Won’t Let You Down,” is superbly crafted with its guitar string plucking, cello, drums and percussion sound. It is as if A Primitive Evolution is relentlessly making a point to the listener that creativity comes in many forms and that alternative music knows no bounds. The title track is slower than the majority of the collection but is the most pensive especially with lyrics “between life and the grave….what I couldn’t see, but couldn’t believe.” The closing song on The Prize is “We Are Lost,” takes up for the outkasts, the downtrodden, and those who are seeking to understand life and the meaning behind it.
Recorded at Mushroom Studios, The Prize “is a gateway record. There are three brand new songs as well as reinvented acoustic versions of songs from the debut. We were originally intending to pull off some songs quickly, over a couple of weeks. Then we were going to go right back in and make a heavy record. We wanted to take a different swing at songs from the first record.,” notes band member Stu Dead. “We want to inspire others to be creative,” vocalist Carruthers adds.
“It’s the epitome of pure enjoyment of music,” member Stephany Seki states. “Spreading that virus is why we started. It’s why we bolster our shows with visual aesthetics and video production. It’s a branding of sorts. It creates an entire universe within a band.” The Prize is one of the best independent alternative albums I’ve heard in quite some time.
