Researchers from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and Batson College (BC) say the battle between reason and faith can be traced back to the very structure of the human brain.

Expanding on the opposing domains hypothesis (ODH), this study asserts that because the 2 networks within the brain are at odds with each other, critical thinking manifests without empathy. However, when reasoning and logic are necessary, the analytical neuro-network is subdued.

Susanne.Posel-Headline.News.Official- brain.on.religion_occupycorporatismBelief in the supernatural exists throughout history because of a “tension between [neural] networks” that facilitates a “non-material way of understanding the world” because of a lack of fundamental understanding of the material world.

Essentially Immanuel Kant was correct when he claimed that “there are 2 distinct types of truth: empirical and moral.”

According to the researchers: “When there’s a question of faith, from the analytic point of view, it may seem absurd. But, from what we understand about the brain, the leap of faith to belief in the supernatural amounts to pushing aside the critical/analytical way of thinking to help us achieve greater social and emotional insight.”

When it comes to rational thought versus faith, almost 3 out of 5 Americans are convinced that science and religion are in conflict with one another.

Last year, a Rice University survey confirmed that 70% of evangelicals are convinced that science and religion as complimentary. In addition, previous research has shown that 76% of scientists adhere to one religion or another. More research into this conflict shows that 15% of scientists affiliated with major universities see a conflict between science and religion.

The inspiration for this study was borne out of a desire to disprove the contention that religious persons are less intelligent than their reasoning counterparts. The study not only established this to be true, but “at the same time showed that people with faith are more prosocial and empathic.”

Less than 6 months ago, a study was published in Current Biology which explained how religious belief had a negative influence on children with respect of altruism.

Strikingly, it was children of the Christian and Muslim faith who expressed the least amount of mercy when dolling out punishment, and frequently appeared to be more judgmental than their religious counterparts from different faiths.

With 84% of the world’s population identifying as being “religious” and contentious social behavior is fostered by this religiosity, it is no wonder there is a lack of morality being enacted between humans while simultaneously, those of religious faith believe their faith is a “prerequisite of morality”.
