Thirty Infected With HIV in Seattle After Preventative Check-Ups

(Steven Ahle) Thirty men who had colon exams at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, W.A. may have gotten more than they bargained for. A few weeks after their exam, they got a letter from the hospital notifying them that the probes used on them were not properly sterilized and that they needed to be tested for HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

The 30 people were told that the risk of disease is low, but that’s not really going over well with anyone. Typically all you have to worry about with a colon exam is cancer. Several of the men voiced their displeasure at being put at risk.

Dr. John Vassall, Chief Medical Officer, said:

“Certainly I’m upset and certainly I can understand why the patients would be upset We want to do everything right for our patients all the time, every time. Unfortunately, in this case, we didn’t.”
