Top scientist says thanks for maths funds

Australia’s chief scientist has congratulated the government for beefing up maths, engineering and science education with a $54 million budget boost over four years.

“It is a truly positive move taken to set the nation up for a positive future,” Professor Ian Chubb said.

The budget also allows for a national mathematics and science education and industry adviser to join the chief scientist’s office.

“This funding reflects the high priority accorded science, mathematics and engineering by the government,” Prof Chubb said.

Australian Academy of Science president Suzanne Cory said the announcement of new funding was important at a time when Australian school students’ interest and participation in science was in steady decline.

But Dr Cory said the budget did not make allowances for an international science collaborations program.

She said it left the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Scheme clouded in “uncertainty”.
