Toulouse shooting: four Jewish victims laid to rest in Jerusalem

Mr Sandler was a French national who had returned to teach at the school where
the shooting took place and which he himself had attended after living with
his family in Israel for several years. All other victims had joint
French-Israeli nationality.

Before meeting Mr Juppe later, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu,
linked the attack on the school to anti-Israel “propaganda”.

“We must fight this extraordinary propaganda against Israel and Jews
everywhere, against innocents, which leads these people to perpetrate such
barbaric acts,” he said.

The Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, denounced the attack and the
link made by the presumed killer to Palestinian children.

“It’s time for criminals to stop using the Palestinian cause to justify
their terrorist actions,” he said. “The children of Palestine want
nothing but dignified lives for themselves and for all the children.”

Hamas, the militant group which controls Gaza, also distanced themselves from
the killings, saying its policy was only to operate inside the occupied
territories.

“Our conflict is not with the Jews, but with the Zionist occupation,”
Taher al-Nono, a senior spokesman told The Daily Telegraph. “This is
our position as the Palestinian resistance.”

French President Nicolas Sarkozy told France would not give in to a desire for
revenge after the shootings of a rabbi, three children, and three soldiers
of North African origin before heading to funeral services for two
paratroopers killed in Montauban, near Toulouse.

In blustery conditions, the French leader stood as the flag drapped coffins
were given full honours on a military parade ground.
