International passengers again faced delays at Sydney airport, after customs workers walked off the job.

QANTAS estimates almost 8500 people will be affected by one-hour strikes by the Transport Workers’ Union and continuing action by licensed engineers tomorrow.

The estimate comes as international travellers arriving at Sydney Airport this morning were again hit by stoppages by Customs and Border Protection staff.

The airline says it will be forced to delay 39 flights by up to an hour and cancel two flights in the evening due to the nationwide stoppages by the TWU to report progress on stalled negotiations and action by the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA).

Qantas is contacting customers who were booked on flights that have been cancelled and those that have been significantly delayed and posting updates on its website.

The airline estimates 25,000 passengers will have been affected by cancelled and delayed flights since action against it by three unions began.

Qantas Group Executive Olivia Wirth apologised to passengers and said the airline would again deploy Australian-based Qantas management staff to undertake operational roles such as baggage handling and catering.

“This really couldn’t have come at a worse time with passengers trying to get to the AFL and NRL Grand Finals and many families heading away for the school holidays,” she said.

Both sides charge the other with failing to negotiate and the TWU has accused Qantas management of being at war with its workers.
