Democrat Senator Bob Casey asked Donald Trump and the whole of Twitter for help in a case of a 5 year old boy and his mother being deported by Homeland Security (DHS).

Casey said on Twiter: “This 5yo and his mother aren’t ‘bad hombres.’ They aren’t in a gang, they’re running from death vulnerable, and scared.”

Both the boy and his mother came to the United States seeking asylum after fleeing Honduras because of gang violence. The boy is eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) which would assist the child in obtaining a green card based on the fact that the child could be construed as having been neglected, and his mother has no criminal background.

As Casey attempted to track the boy and his mother through Berks Residential Center in Pennsylvania where they were being held as DHS was rushing them through the deportation process and put the 2 on a plane headed for Honduras.

Casey told the press: “The last couple of days — 24 hours now — to say they’ve been frustrating would be an understatement. The Department of Homeland Security has an obligation to keep our country safe, in addition to other agencies in the federal government, but it seems like the focus has been on a 5-year-old and his mother, instead of using every resource and ounce of focus on folks that pose a real threat and danger to the country.”

The senator spoke with John Kelly, secretary of DHS, Reince Priebus, White House chief of state, and Thomas Horman, acting director of US Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) about the boy and his mother, but this outreach ended in vain.

Casey said he and Kelly did not agree on the circumstances and in the end the senator could not save the boy and his mother.

Kelly coldly argued: “You can’t pick and choose the laws that you obey. And I can’t pick and choose the laws that we’re by law required to enforce. … We had a court order to remove her and we did.”

After the fact, Kelly warned a reporter: “Don’t call me or tweet or go to the press with outrageous stories about how we do business.”

The attorney defending the boy and his mother told reporters that she and other lawyers were “literally arguing to include this child [as SIJS status] while immigration was watching the plane take off” with the boy and his mother in it.

Thanks to Trump’s immigration policies, between January and March of this year 5,441 immigrants with no criminal record have been arrested and placed into the deportation system.
