Donald Trump is preparing to sign an executive order this week that would allow Christians to discriminate against their fellow Americans because of their “deeply held religious beliefs”.

The drafted order follows a bill that provides legal cover for businesses and individuals who believe it is their “god given right” to refuse service to members of the LGBTQ community based on passages in their religious texts.

According to leaked documents, the order makes provisions for protected individuals, “any organization, including closely held for-profit corporations” who have religious beliefs that have refused to employ, contract or provide benefits to persons with whom they personally disagree with; such as gays and lesbians.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other civil rights groups are preparing legal action against the Trump administration should this executive order go through.

James Esseks, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & HIV Project for the ACLU commented: “We are ready to sue if they do something that authorizes discrimination. If Trump signs an order like the one that we saw a couple months ago, it would violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment and the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.”

Camilla Taylor, senior legal counsel for Lambda Legal said: “We will fight this with everything we have. We are prepared to sue in a very short timeframe if the executive order closely resembles the leaked drafts.”

Rabbi David Saperstein, former US religious freedom ambassador for the State Department, sees “significant constitutional problems” with this executive order.

Saperstein told members of Congress earlier this year: “I think it raises very serious equal protection issues.”

In addition, a full-page ad quoting 1,300 religious leaders, decried the order as an “enshrining [of] one [conservative] religious perspective” over all others.

The ad goes on to say: “Although it purports to strengthen religious freedom, what this order would actually do is misuse this freedom, turning it into a weapon to discriminate against broad swaths of our nation, including LGBTQ people, women, and children in foster care. We urge you to turn away from all proposals that would abuse religious freedom, including any executive orders on this issue that are currently under consideration.”
