Donald Trump is one of the most unpopular presidents in US history, but the swiftness with which the American public have voiced with disapproval with this administration is impressive.

According to a new Quinnipac University poll , Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 34%. Back in April of this year, his approval rating was 35% which is not much better than current polling.

Concerning Trump’s base, 32% still believe that Trump has done nothing wrong and 24% said his advisers are blameless with regard to the question of collusion between his campaign and Russia.

This poll was released hours before former FBI Director James Comey began his testimony on Capitol Hill with the Senate Intelligence Committee.

During his opening statements, Comey said his firing “didn’t make any sense to me” because Trump told him “repeatedly” that Come “was doing a great job.”

Comey explained that he became convinced as time went on that Trump “was looking to get something” on him in order to justify his firing. He said the White House’s tactic was “to defame me and then the FBI.”

The former FBI director said Trump’s comments were “lies”.

Republican Senator and chair of the committee Richard Burr got Comey to confirm White House talking points such as he had not “seen [any] indication… whatsoever” that there was evidence of Russia tapering with the votes themselves. In addition, Comey told Burr that no one in this administration outright told him to stop the Russia investigation.

Republican Senator James Risch attempted to argue semantics with Comey, claiming that Trump’s “hope” that he would let Michael Flynn “go” does not construe obstruction.

Comey disagreed, saying: “Those words are not an order. I took it as a direction.”

When asked by Senator Dianne Feinstein why Comey did not confront Trump in the Oval Office after being asked to “let Flynn go”, Comey said: “Maybe if I were stronger I would have. I was so stunned by the conversation that I just took it in. Maybe if I did it again, I would do it better.”

He also commented on why he did not report Trump’s conversations about Flynn to his superiors. Comey said there was no one in a position to take action because his boss was Jeff Sessions.

Comey added that he decided to “hold” and “keep in a box” his memos based on conversations with Trump for the sake of the investigation.
