Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki has declared his bid for re-election in the country’s first presidential vote since the ouster of former dictator, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Marzouki was picked as president in December 2011 in a vote in the National Constituent Assembly, which was elected after the ouster of Ben Ali in a popular revolution earlier in the same year.
The 69-year-old started his re-election campaign with an attack on “dirty money” in politics on Saturday.
“My candidacy is an example of transparency,” Marzouki said after registering for the vote, which is set to be held on November 23, adding, “We must not allow corruption in this first democratic experience.”
Marzouki faces a number of rival candidates including National Assembly speaker, Mustapha Ben Jaafar, a former central bank chief, and one-time prime minister, Beji Caid Essebsi.
The presidential vote, along with parliamentary elections in October, is regarded as the final step in transition of power in the North African country.
Marzouki, a French-trained doctor and veteran opposition rights activist, was forced to live in exile in France for a decade as he was Ben Ali’s bête noire throughout his political career.
He led the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights from 1989 until 1994.
The Western-backed dictator, Ben Ali, fled to Saudi Arabia three years ago, following weeks of bloody protests over corruption, unemployment and high food prices.
