Turkey opp. slams May Day violence

Leader of Turkey’s main opposition party slams the use of force by police against May Day protesters in Istanbul, saying that the government is scared of workers.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), made the remarks on Thursday after security forces used water cannons and fired tear gas canisters to prevent hundreds of protesters from reaching Taksim Square.

The government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is “scared” of workers, Kilicdaroglu said, adding, “I condemn this unfair intervention that is made on May Day, Labor Day.”

Earlier in the day, protesters defied a government ban on May Day rallies and marched toward Istanbul’s iconic square, the focal point of anti-government rallies last summer.

Mahmut Tanal, a CHP lawmaker, was beaten by security forces as well.

“Demonstrating on May 1 is a constitutional right everywhere in the world. We’re allowed to demonstrate wherever we want without facing so much police and without any provocation from the government,” he said.

Last week, Erdogan warned protesters to “give up hopes” of gathering at Taksim Square, and find another place outside Istanbul. But activists rejected his suggestion and promised to challenge the ban.

On Wednesday, Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu said the ban came after intelligence reports said that “illegal terrorist groups” were plotting unrest at the square.

Some 40,000 police officers, dozens of water cannon trucks and armored vehicles were deployed all over the city.

Local authorities also blocked roads, shut down metro stations and cancelled ferry services to cope with protesters.
