Approximately two dozen people, mostly women and children, have been killed in an attack by Ugandan rebels in the volatile east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, an official says.
Ugandan rebels used machetes, axes and hoes to hack and club nearly 22 people to death in the town of Eringeti near Beni on Friday night, Governor of North Kivu Province Julien Paluku confirmed.
Some 10 women, eight children and four men were savagely killed during the brutal assault, officials said. Several of the children had their heads bashed against the walls.
Local authorities said the attackers were Ugandan rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces and National Army for the Liberation of Uganda (ADF-Nalu).
The ADF-Nalu remains the only militant group active in the region, authorities said.
The bloody attack marks the third such incident to have occurred over the past month despite the presence of UN peacekeepers in the eastern Congo.
On Thursday, 26 people were slaughtered with machetes in the town of Beni – a town with a population of only half a million – during an attack also blamed on Ugandan rebels.
In the past two weeks, at least 79 people have been savagely executed by the Ugandan militants.
The ADF-Nalu rebels, now believed to number around 400, have been accused of serious human rights violations, including using child soldiers and rape.
The rebels are engaged in trafficking gold and wood to finance themselves, which could further destabilize the vast region rich in minerals, the United Nations said.
The Congo has faced numerous problems over the past few decades, such as grinding poverty, crumbling infrastructure, and a war in the east of the country, which has dragged on since 1998 and left over 5.5 million people dead.
