Prime Minister and billionaire par excellence Dmitry Medvedev – whose approval ratings have plummeted in recent months, not least due to a corruption scandal – assured Russians that he absolutely can raise minimum wages above subsistence level.

But Medvedev also made sure to stress that he needs another two years to achieve that goal – which may prompt some observers to ask- well, well, does that mean until after the next elections?

Without going into many details Medvedev claimed “We have plans – I voiced them during my address to the State Duma (lower house of parliament) to raise (wages) to minimum subsistence level within the next two years.”

Medvedev made this remark on Wednesday at a meeting to ? Correct, to “discuss the implementation of United Russia’s campaign promises during last year’s parliamentary elections”.

When Medvedev spoke to the Duma in April, he said that Russia’s minimum wage needed to rise to subsistence levels “within the next several years,” without naming a specific timeframe.

Judging by the statement made by Russian prime Minister and billionair Medvedev this goal cannot be achieved before the 2018 elections – but it’s of course always good to be able to recycle old election promises.
