Two pedestrians have been killed on the NSW mid-north coast, taking the state’s Christmas holiday road toll to 17.
Shortly after 12.30pm (AEDT) on New Year’s Day, police were called to the Oxley Highway, west of Port Macquarie.
The pedestrians, both believed to be in their 20s, were found dead at the scene. A motorist is helping police with their inquiries.
Meanwhile, 56-year-old man died on New Year’s Eve after his motorbike hit a kangaroo north of Moree, in the state’s north.
The accident on the Newell Highway happened shortly after 7pm on Boxing Day.
Double demerit points remain in force until January 2, with speeding and not wearing a seat belt being especially targeted.
Acting Superintendent Phillip Brooks, from the traffic and highway patrol command, said 781 people had been fined during the Christmas period for not wearing a seatbelt, compared with 689 in the same period a year ago.
“I am stunned that parents and carers would so willingly put children at risk so flagrantly,” he said in a statement.
