Eleven people, most of them Kurdish protesters, were hurt in what the Washington D.C. police chief described as a “brutal attack” on peaceful protesters outside the residence of the Turkish Ambassador during President R. Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to the United States in may 2017.

The incident occurred after a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Erdogan at the White House. Attracting international attention and prompting protests against “Erdogan’s terror Turks” in the USA and abroad, the incident further stressed already tense U.S. – Turkey bilateral relations.

The office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Colombia said in a statement that charges had already been brought against 16 of the defendants and Turkey’s indictment added three to the list.

The three who were added were named as Muhsin Kose, Yusuf Ayar and Harrettin Eren, who were among the 15 Turkish security officials indicted, said the statement. The others were not named by name.

“All 19 defendants were indicted on a charge of conspiracy to commit a crime of violence, with a bias crime enhancement,” it said. The charge is punishable by a maximum of 15 years in prison and bias enhancement could lead to longer sentences, the statement said.

Some defendants face additional charges. Only two of the 19 are in custody, and they are due to appear in court on September 7, the statement said. In May the U.S. State Department has confirmed that Erdogan’s security detail was behind the brutal attack on Kurdish protesters in Washington. The Turkish Embassy has blamed the violence on demonstrators linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, which Turkey and the United States consider a terrorist group.
