The demonstration, which was held on Monday, was organized by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) at the start of the month-long protest called “Time to Scrap Trident: Stop fooling with nuclear weapons”.
The gathering marked the first march by campaigners in Berkshire, where the CND was first founded in the 50s.
Demonstrators highlighted the wasteful spending on replacing Trident when the money could be spent on areas such as education, health and the environment.
Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn, Green Party leader Natalie Bennett and CND general secretary Kate Hudson were among those who addressed the crowd.
“The British people know that £100bn spent on building a Cold War weapons system is £100bn stolen from the coffers of other vital public needs,” Hudson said.
The British government already spends £3 billion a year on developing the Trident nuclear weapons system.
In November last year, the CND said £3 billion is enough to build 30,000 homes in Britain every year that would fully eliminate the country’s need to build extra homes for social housing while creating 60,000 new jobs each year.
