‘UK child sex abuse trafficking on rise’

Official figures show that the number of UK-born children allegedly trafficked for sexual exploitation more than doubled last year.

Figures published by the National Crime Agency (NCA) on Monday revealed that 56 minors from Britain were flagged as potential victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation last year, a rise of 155 percent on 2012.

The NCA said it is not yet clear whether those children are being taken out of the UK or moved within the country.

The data also suggested that the number of foreign youngsters identified as potential victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation increased by 11 percent to 88.

According to the NCA, a total of 1,746 people from 112 different countries were highlighted as potential victims of trafficking in 2013, up 47 percent in the previous year.

The study also revealed that the most common nationality or country of origin for child victims of trafficking – not just for sexual abuse – was Vietnam, followed by the UK and Albania.

UK Home Office Minister Karen Bradley said the UK is increasing protection for trafficking victims by strengthening the legislation through a Modern Slavery Bill.

“The Bill will send the strongest possible message to criminals that if you are involved in this disgusting trade in human beings, you will be arrested, you will be prosecuted and you will be locked up,” Bradley stated.

An earlier report by the UK’s biggest children’s charity, Barnardo’s, warned that the UK has seen an “alarming” year-on-year rise in children being trafficked and sexually exploited.
