From November EU immigrants in Britain will only be able to claim welfare benefits for three months, rather than the previous six months, under newly set out regulations.
British Prime Minister David Cameron announced the new rules on Tuesday in an attempt to cut European migrants’ access to social security payments.
“We’re … making sure people come for the right reasons – which has meant addressing the magnetic pull of Britain’s benefits system,” he said.
Cameron said that by limiting job seekers’ welfare access to only three months he was sending a clear message to potential migrants that “You cannot expect to come to Britain and get something for nothing.”
Cameron also pledged to stop more than 500,000 British jobs being advertised across the EU.
On July 14, British Department of Heath announced that immigrants from outside the EU who seek help from the National Health Service (NHS) in Britain are to be charged 150 percent of the cost.
The department said that the move is a bid to deter the so-called “health tourism.”
It also said that currently when travelers and migrants arrive in the UK, they get free NHS care, which leaves the health service “open to abuse.”
In accordance with the new plan, a non-EU patient who for example receives a £100 procedure will have to pay £150.
The non-EU patient will also have to pay 75 percent of the treatment cost up-front and the same amount after the procedure is completed. Hospitals that fail to identify and properly bill chargeable patients will be fined.
