UK families face council tax bill hike

According to a research conducted by the thinktank Resolution Foundation, almost three in four local authorities in England (74 percent) are planning to increase their demands on families whose council tax is discounted by the British government.

Millions of people currently receive council tax benefit to help them cover the cost of bills from their local authority. But from April, this system will be scrapped and authorities will have to introduce their own council tax support scheme while at the same time they are being hit with a ten percent cut in funding.

The study found some councils are planning to charge affected households an extra 20 percent of the full council tax bill, resulting in an increase in bills by £600 a year in the worst cases.

“Millions of England’s poorest households – both in and out of work – are already very close to the edge given falling wages, tax credits and benefits,” said the foundation’s chief executive Gavin Kelly.
