According to a report from the all-party Home Affairs Select Committee, the Home Office’s backlog of half a million unresolved immigration and asylum cases will take almost four decades to clear.
“The backlog of cases has now hit a staggering half a million people. This could fill Wembley Stadium to capacity six times over,” said Committee chairman Keith Vaz.
He also said bonuses for senior Home Office officials should not be paid until the backlogs are cleared.
Earlier in March, British Home Secretary Theresa May abolished the UK Border Agency to replace it with UK Visas and Immigration and an Immigration Enforcement command, which were brought back under the control of ministers.
Parliamentary watchdog, however, said nothing has changed despite the abolition, adding that the axed UK Border Agency needs to go beyond “rebranding”.
