The UK government is seeking exemption from a European law that would close down one of the continent’s dirtiest coal power stations in the south of England.
The Welsh government, alongside UK’s Department of Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra), is lobbying the European Commission (EC) to keep open the Aberthaw power station in south Wales — named one of the top 30 highest carbon-emitting plants in Europe.
The power station has been criticized for its excessive nitrogen oxide emissions, which currently exceeds the new legal limit by five times.
Moreover, recent proposals submitted by the UK government for reducing emissions under new European laws have been littered with “inconsistent or missing” data, the EC said
The EC has already begun infraction proceedings against the UK government over the Aberthaw power station in south Wales.
An investigation by a coalition of green groups shows that nine of Europe’s 30 most polluting power plants last year were located in the UK.
Power plants in Drax, Aberthaw, Eggborough and Longannet are responsible for nearly two-thirds of the UK’s power sector carbon emissions, but produced less than a third of its power supply.
Britain is facing pressure on gas reserves as a string of coal and oil-fired power stations across the country face shutdown.
The UK’s household energy bills is expected to rise further as energy suppliers implement new charges.
This comes as Energy regulator Ofgem announced that the biggest six power firms in Britain – Centrica, SSE, EDF Energy, Scottish Power, E.ON, RWE npower – had seen their profits rise from £233 million in 2009 to more than £1 billion by 2012.
