UK MPs urged to stand by press victims

Miliband said this is the right time for the country’s politicians to put an end to abuses by the press without being concerned about their capacity to damage political careers.

“Politicians were fearful of speaking out because they thought I’m going to get bad publicity, it will turn the press against me”, Miliband said.

“Monday is the day that politics has got to do the duty by the victims and has got to stand up for the victims,” he added.

This comes as British Prime Minister David Cameron faced a defeat in his attempts over future of press regulation as offered by Lord Justice Leveson’s report into press misconduct.

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister told a press conference that he would let MPs decide whether to back the Conservatives’ plan for a Royal Charter to support a new press regulator.

The House of Commons will vote on the future of press regulation on Monday, March 18.
