Speaking on the state-run BBC Radio Wales’ Sunday Supplement program, Kinnock warned that Cameron’s stance on the EU vote poses a risk to Britain.
Kinnock, who is also a former EU Commissioner, said that Cameron is “rolling the dice” and that the vision of leaving the EU would put off potential investors from Britain.
The former Labour leader described the British PM’s position as unstable due to the pressure put on him by eurosceptics in his Conservative party.
“He [Cameron] got himself into a corner, initially by courting the support of Europhobes in his own party and then finding that he was becoming obligated to them and trying to appease them. And of course he’s suffering the penalty that all appeasers end up suffering, or certainly should and that is to be eaten by his opponents,” Kinnock said.
This comes as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has also warned the coalition government that it would be a “huge problem” for Britain if it were to leave the EU.
Blair stressed that Cameron’s pledge for an in-out vote on membership in the bloc is not “sensible” and that the country could face prolonged “uncertainty” in the lead-up to the referendum.
This is while supporters of Cameron argue that the EU is out-of-touch, too expensive and unsupportive of Britain’s national interests.
